Engineering
Engineers are the driving force behind the new knowledge economy, providing research, technologies, and specialty expertise that sparks innovations that impact every aspect of daily life. The College of Engineering and the McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship collaborate on a field of study that teaches you the principles and skills necessary to bring an innovative idea from formulation to implementation.
The following initiatives outline the collaborative efforts to between the McGuire Center and the College of Engineering for both undergraduates and graduates:
The College of Engineering offers a BS in Engineering Management degree. This degree has grown to be the 3rd largest degree program in the College based on degrees awarded. Qualified seniors are encouraged to consider taking the two-semester McGuire Entrepreneurship sequence of classes in the Eller College of Management as an alternative to the traditional capstone senior design classes. The Entrepreneurship classes are cross-listed in Engineering as SIE 487 (Fall semester) and SIE 484 (Spring semester). Engineering students participate in creating a formal business plan and are expected to contribute the engineering design elements of the business plan.
Beginning Fall 2009, the College will offer a class (SIE 567) in engineering economics and finance to graduate students in engineering and science with little or no background in this subject area. This class will prepare graduate students to enter the McGuire Entrepreneurship Program with sufficient knowledge to create pro forma financial statements which are integral to formal business plans. This class is a component of a larger effort to promote business formation in Arizona by increasing the financial literacy of researchers. Improving research commercialization productivity at the University is a key outcome of this initiative.
The Engineering Management Program and the McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship collaborate to maintain the financial modeling program used by graduate and undergraduate students in the Entrepreneurship Program. This financial modeling program is also offered to the larger entrepreneurial community including the Arizona Center for Innovation. Additionally, the graduate finance class for the McGuire Program is a collaborative teaching effort between the Finance department and Engineering Management.
