Bio
Mark Schankerman is a noted economist who holds the James and Pamela Muzzy Chair in Entrepreneurship at The University of Arizona. The Muzzy Chair holder is a tenured faculty member who also serves as research leader and Executive Director of the internationally top-ranked McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship. As the Muzzy Chair, Professor Schankerman will oversee a robust research agenda directed at leading academic understanding of the discipline, with a particular focus on innovation-based entrepreneurship and in building links among diverse researchers across departments and colleges at The University of Arizona.
Professor Schankerman came to Arizona from the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he served as Professor of Economics and Research Director of the Programme on Productivity, Innovation, and Intellectual Property Rights.
He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in economics from Harvard University, and his B.A. from Brandeis University.
Professor Schankerman’s areas of research include intellectual property rights, corporate innovation, industrial economics and regulation, transition economics, and applied micro-economics. He is co-editor of Economics of Transition and sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Industrial Economics. He served as Director of Policy Studies and Advisor to the Chief Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London, and has also worked at the World Bank in Washington, D.C.
