For the first time ever, the annual McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship year-end showcase competition ended in a tie, with two finalist teams taking top honors.

The judges awarded TruckItNow.com — an online exchange for commercial shippers and trucking companies — and Yakaroni — an internet tool designed to bring grandparents and grandchildren together through an interactive multimedia platform — first place out of the 24 teams.

The 2010 ventures also included Re+, which provides consumers with purified water through single-serve water bottle refill kiosks; G-Fabrications, which gives consumers the ability to design their own aftermarket rims; Just4Kidz, a supplier of Internet safety tools for parents; and InnovAid, which is focused on improving disaster relief response time.

Also new this year, law students from the James E. Rogers College of Law presented the legal issues surrounding each of the ventures; this is the third year law students have worked with the entrepreneurship teams in a mock law firm format. The law students from the finalist teams recapped the ventures’ legal issues for the judging panel, and presented on the experience as a whole.
